Houseclub

As part of the supporting programme of the HAU Hebbel am Ufer, regular workshops for young people have been taking place since 2011 under the label Houseclub. The workshops usually last one month. The Houseclub is a place of dialogue and interchange through contemporary theatre and dance, and is tailored to the interests of school students and young people.

The Houseclub is also a residency programme for artists whose work links to the HAU’s themes and aesthetics. In contact with the young participants, the invited artists develop strategies for conveying their ideas and concerns. The Houseclub is often the young people’s first contact with the theatre, where they discover various models of thinking and expression through working with the artists. Whether puppet-making with the group Creaturephonic, giving a noise concert under the guidance of the collective musiktheater bruit! or filming videos about their passions and crazes in the manner of the performer Damian Rebgetz – to name just a few examples – at the end of workshops with professionals the school students present their own works, which regularly enthuse audiences with their wit, creativity and imagination.

Theatres and schools are institutions with quite different tasks. The intensive partnership over many years between HAU Hebbel am Ufer and our neighbouring Hector-Peterson-Schule is therefore a piece of good fortune. For a good partnership can only persist if it is continually fostered. What is true in love also applies to working with young people. In this case it can only happen with the support of committed teachers and a school that allows the theatre a lot of space.

The Houseclub is an indispensable part of HAU Hebbel am Ufer. Unfortunately, this programme for the cultural education of young people cannot be financed solely from the theatre’s own budget. For this reason the Houseclub relies on partnerships and regular third-party funding. For example, in "We like China and China Likes Us," from 2012 to 2014, artists and young people were able to learn from one another for two years thanks to the support of the TANZFONDS. Aside from the three productions that were presented during a festival in April 2014, the school students attended a seminar on the history and theory of dance, looked into the life and work of Joseph Beuys, visited museums and went to the theatre. In 2016 the Houseclub celebrates its fifth anniversary. Funded by Berlin’s Projektfonds Kulturelle Bildung, it will present a special birthday programme entitled "Work Love Money – 5 Years of Houseclub".
